Zlatograd is situated in the eastern Rhodopes, in the southern part of Bulgaria, close to its border with Greece. You can find many architectural and cultural monuments dated from XVIII - XIX c. in the town. The oldest church in the Rhodopes here is preserved - "Uspenie Bogorodichno" - it was built in 1834. Nowadays Zlatograd is a modern town, which has preserved the enchantment and the traditions of the Bulgarian Renaissance. There are numerous restraunts, taverns, private hotels and boarding h ouses in the town. You can also enjoy the beauty of the "St. Atanas" chapel. It is beautifully situated on a hill by the town and is a challenge for the enthusiasts of the pedestrian tourism.
The situation of the chapels "St. Atanas", "St. Nedelya", "St. Iliya" and "St. Constantine and Elena" is very interesting - they are situated on the four tops in the surroundings of Zlatograd in the shape of a cross. The town is believed to be protected by them.
