General Information

If you are looking for fantastic rock formations and many wide and spacious beaches, then Sozopol is the best place for your holiday. It is the oldest town along the Black Sea coast. Situated on a small peninsula, it is 35km south from the city of Burgas and close to it is St. Ivan island, the biggest island on the Bulgarian Black Sea coast.

Sozopol is one of the most attractive tourist centers in Bulgaria. It is a combination of the antiquity and the present. You can see narrow cobblestone alleys, old houses and numerous churches on the one side of the bay and beautiful modern buildings on the opposite side of the bay.

The marsh area Arkutino and the natural preserve are near Sozopol. They are situated near the Ropotamo River and have rich flora and fauna.

Sights

The old town of Sozopol is declared as an architectural and archaeological preserve.

There are facts showing that the town is dated from ancient times – the end of the 5th millennium b.c. by the time of civilizations which existed about 400 years and disappeared because of the climate changes.

The town was restored in 610 b.c. and was named Apolonia. It was developed as a trades and harbor center.

The visitors can enjoy the cultural and historical heritage from the antiquity and the Medieval. In the old town of Sozopol, there are preserved churches, chapels, typical wooden houses, and a fort wall.

• The archaeological and architectural museum, which is unique and famous in Bulgaria and abroad;
• The architectural and archaeological preserve – the Ancient Sozopol;
• Fortress walls (VI – XIV c.);
• An art gallery which is in the building of the ´Old school´ – a cultural monument;
• A house-museum Aleksandar Mutafov;
• The ´St. Bogorodica´ church (XV c.) which is protected by UNESCO;
• The ´St. Georgi´ church which is the biggest church in Sozopol and is build in the 1st quarter of XIX c.;
• The ´St. Zosim´ church built in 1857;
